Classes for Men

King County Correctional Facility: Seattle, WA

Program since: 2005

“It’s so rare that we have the opportunity to be calm behind bars. I am so thankful to be able to stretch and meditate while in this stressful place.” – male student

We teach one weekly 2-hour yoga class to adult men awaiting trial or serving short sentences (one year or less). The average length of stay at the jail is 18 days.

Monroe Correctional Complex (MCC): Monroe, WA

Program since: 2008

“I began my practice thinking it would help my flexibility and strength…Never did I think Yoga would yield much more. Yoga provides for me a connection that was missing in my life; the connection between my body, my mind, and my environment.” – excerpt from a student’s letter

Minimum Security Unit (MCC): We teach two weekly 75-minute yoga classes to adult men, all within 3 years of release. One class is offered to men suffering low-level mental illness; the second is offered to the general population.

Washington State Reformatory Unit (MCC): We teach two weekly 120-minute yoga classes to adult men in conjunction with University Beyond Bars.

Special Offenders Unit (MCC): We teach one weekly private 60-minute yoga class to an individual student as part of his therapeutic intervention.
