Since 2008, YBB has helped thousands of thousands of people experiencing incarceration in Washington State transform their lives through our programs. The Position

Yoga Behind Bars seeks a creative and visionary Executive Director to guide, inspire, and promote our programs and services within the carceral system. Working in tandem with our Board of Directors, Staff, and community, the Executive Director is responsible for fulfilling the mission and vision of Yoga Behind Bars in all areas of strategy development and operation.

This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of YBB. The ED will have overall strategic and operational responsibility, reporting to our Board of Directors. Responsibilities include leading the organization’s fiscal health and overall strategic program development and delivery, staff management, fundraising, and promotion. The ED will suggest and implement policies, carry out objectives, and enforce budgets as established by the Board for the operation of the organization.

The Right Candidate

The right candidate will have a deep understanding of our organizational values: integrity, humility, social and transformative justice, and connection.

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Higher or equivalent experience in senior leadership or management role in non-profit, business, public administration, education, social science, or related field.

  • Education, training, and/or lived experience around trauma-informed care, restorative programs, or organizations within the carceral system

  • Experience recruiting, training, and coordinating volunteers.

  • Prior experience directly training or teaching and ability to implement effective training programs.

  • Ability to effectively work with diverse communities.

  • Proven financial management and budget preparation and management skills.

  • Ability to work with a volunteer Board of Directors and assist with non-profit fundraising.

  • Organizational skills, including attention to detail and multi-task.

  • Strong Interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively in a team setting and to build and sustain a diverse and cohesive staff.

  • Strong sense of personal accountability and ability to hold others accountable.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, including experience with public speaking.

  • Good working knowledge of computer programs, including Microsoft Office Suite including Publisher, web page administration, accounting software, online cloud-based fundraising donor management platforms, and online communication tools.


Compensation is $90,000 to $115,000 DOE annually. This is a full-time, exempt position based on a 35-hour workweek.
